Acceptance as the Gateway to Power & Love
– Women’s Workshop April 29, 2018
“It is only by practicing through a continual succession of agreeable and disagreeable situations that we acquire true strengths. To accept that pain is inherent and to live our lives from this understanding is to create the causes and conditions for happiness.” ~ Suzuki Roshi
Acceptance is the most crucial component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and it is also the most frequently misunderstood. Tragically, this misconception prevents us from living in a way that is juicy and empowered. It blocks us from true connection with ourselves, with others, and with all-that-is. It is the obstacle to happiness.
This daylong workshop is dedicated to exploring acceptance as it is meant in the ACT model. It interweaves guided contemplation, extemporaneous teachings, small group inquiry, and impromptu one-on-one coaching. Join us and you will:
- DEMYSTIFY what acceptance really means, and gain clarity about your own resistance to acceptance
- UNCOVER your own personal obstacles to acceptance, and learn how to move through those obstacles
- PRACTICE real-time acceptance, and learn to open to the NOW
The transformation is simpler than you can imagine. The result is profound peace.
Who should attend? Today’s teachings are subjective and experiential in nature. They are appropriate for health care professionals as well as the general public. Health care professionals will be able to incorporate the tools and practices offered in this program in ways beneficial to themselves, as well as to their clients/patients.

Continuing Education for this Workshop
Continuing education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided by the Spiritual Competency Resource Center (SCRC) which is co-sponsoring this program. The SCRC is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor CE for psychologists. The SCRC maintains responsibility for this program and its content. SCRC is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN Provider CEP16887) for licensed nurses in California. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE credits for LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFT license renewal for programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the APA. For questions about CE, visit www.spiritualcompetency.com or contact David Lukoff, PhD at CE@spiritualcompetency.com.
Learning objectives for this event are to: 1. Define acceptance from an ACT perspective; 2. Empathize with clients who are demonstrating resistance to acceptance; 3. Differentiate types of “acceptance” (i.e. the feeling from the verb); 4. Describe acceptance in a clinical context using ACT metaphors; and 5. Identify techniques for relaxing into present-moment-awareness, openness, and acceptance. (Click here for further details.)
